South Africa’s indigenous Nguni cattle, long the mainstay of traditional Zulu culture, are possibly the most beautiful cattle in the world, with their variously patterned and multi-coloured hides making a stunning item of home decoration. This particular hideoriginates from the foot hills of the magnificent Drakensberg mountain range in the KwaZulu Natal Province.
Nguni hide floor rugs are easy to maintain requiring a light vacuum from time to time.
The hides fulfil the NZ Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Health requirements.
Cost $895

Source: Tea Total
Anna Salek, founder of Tea Total Ltd, “… was working as a sports masseuse in Sydney some years ago, and read about a shop in Paddington that sold all these different blends.” She tracked the place down and was amazed by the hugh variety of teas. As the owner wasn’t interested in opening a stall at The Rocks she bought 12 of the most colourful teas straight off the shelf and booked a stall at herself. It was, she remembers, a lot of hard work and a huge success – one that prompted her to come home to New Zealand and open the first Tea Total in Auckland in 1995.
Since then Tea Total has gone from strength to strength and now operates out of a warehouse in Albany on Auckland’s North Shore. Selling tea to many cafes, delicatessens, hairdressers, health spas & boutique hotels throughout NZ.
On Fair Trade and Chemicals Anna says,
“While we do not advertise our products as Fair Trade, we buy our breakfast blends and some traditional black and green teas direct from the tea estates in India, Japan and Sri Lanka. There are no middle men involved and while we pay what for us is a good price, it is far in excess of the amount they would receive from giants such as Liptons or Twinings. Workers are unionized, they work eight hour days, five days per week, receive free housing, electricity, schooling and medical clinics. Because of these conditions positions are much sought after and often handed down within families. We don’t have the Fair Trade label but I can personally guarantee the teas above are more than fairly traded.
Our blended teas (fruit infusions, herbal teas and Earl Greys) are sourced in Europe where teas, once bought directly from the grower, are blended with finest quality flavourings, fruits and herbs. All these products are tested by law in German laboratories for 203 chemicals and pesticides. This doesn’t make for a cheap product but does ensure a level of quality that is without equal.”
The Paper Mulberry is delighted to serve these teas in the cafe and sell them in our pantry.
We stock 100g zip-lock resealable pouch packs, in Pure Camomile, Tropical Fruit, Earl Grey Green, Revive, Ginger & Lemon, Peppermint, Breakfast, Earl Grey and Green Tea. Cost varies from $7 to $9. You will find these in our Pantry section by the entrance.
The Hawke’s Bay Trail Run will be in the Pukeora mountain bike park just outside Waipukurau on Sunday 17th July. The Plus Rehab Pukeora Pickled Pukeko will see everyone running around the trails in this lovely part of Waipukurau. The long course option will loop back through the start/finish area, giving the opportunity for supporters to cheer them on. Entries close July 15th.
Even better Dave will be there with the Coffee Cart.

Hepa Paewai
New Zealand Maori and Hawke’s Bay Magpies rugby halfback Hepa Paewai was in the cafe this afternoon talking to Dave about the Great New Zealand Trek.
This trek, which next year goes from Tikokino to Akitio on 10 to 18 March 2012, raises money for Multiple Sclerosis.
You can walk, run, cycle or horse ride the trek and with off road access, en route support, luggage transport, camping and yarding, professional caterers, hot showers, massage, live entertainment, bar, café and a huge support crew it is much more than a trek.
Since 1996 they have raise $250000 for MS in NZ. If you want to be part of next years trek, either doing the trek or supporting find out more at
And there’s a chance Dave might be there with his coffee cart so that’s another incentive to go
For July we have a Walnut Burger. Great for vegetarians (but not vegans) and even the meat lovers will go for them!

The café cat came out of the maize
Paddock one sunny day
Went into The Paper Mulberry Café
Looked around, sat down and stayed
He has made the café his home no more to roam
He could have come by house bus
Or car maybe he was just
Looking for adventure on the road
He is an icon of the café this ginger white cat
Is known far and wide by people
Stopping in as they travel by
They stroke and pat him
When he’s had enough he goes on his way
Around the café
It is said people do not own cats they own you
This is true in the case of the café cat
So if you are passing by stop in for a coffee and a snack
Be sure to stroke or pat
The café cat
Share a picture of your cat with Ginger by posting on our FaceBook wall.
